Eating Safely - Year 5
Background Information
This mini unit has been developed for teachers looking to link technology into their Science curriculum in Year 5. With a culture that is concerned with the health and well-being of our children, teaching them from a young age about how to take care of themselves can only lead to positive outcomes for their futures. Through this unit students will design a technology tool capable of keeping lunchboxes safe from ice-breaks, when ice-bricks melt they can cause the food in our lunchboxes to become soggy by the water they produce. This Design and Technology unit has a cross curriculum element with the Science Curriculum - Identify, plan and apply the elements of scientific investigations to answer questions and solve problems using equipment and materials safely and identifying potential risks (ACSIS086). This mini unit - Eating Safely, requires student to develop a design technology that will focus students learning on choosing the correct materials, tools and equipment to create a waterproof lunchbox that stops ice-bricks from spreading water as it melts. Students will develop safe handling skills and selecting the correct materials based on their properties to safely select and make a new technology that will be able to keep the ice-brick waterproofed while keeping food in the lunchbox cold. This unit will present the structures of the lessons as well as assessment criteria and rubric for marking this Technology element. There will also be addition information for teachers to use for background information and additional support for your students. Content Descriptors
