Breaking my Code - Year 6
Background Information
In this mini unit, students in grade 6 will engage in mathematics like a computer. Student will learn about the binary number system and then use their knowledge to decode letters that are seen on computer screens. Computer are just one of many technologies that use the binary number system - zeros and ones - to convey information. Today's students now live in a digital world, and the most important digits are 1 and 0. The binary number system plays a central role in how information of all kinds is stored on computers. This unit draws from the Digital Technologies curriculum for Year 5 and 6, this unit engages student in developing their understanding how computers use binary coding to present information. This unit will have a cross-curriculum link with Mathematics in Year 6 through the content description Interpret and compare a range of data displays, including side-by-side column graphs for two categorical variables (ACMSP147), linking students understanding that data can be represented in different ways. Information for teachers
Please find below links that will help develop a deeper understanding of binary coding and it's relationship with the base 2 value. These links will also assist teachers with developing a clearer understanding for teachers when it comes to understanding binary coding.
